Yasser Suleiman: We aim to build democratic Syria representing all Syrians

Amid growing calls across Syria to establish a democratic system that represents the aspirations of all components, political figures and observers view the current stage as a critical juncture in the country’s history—one that requires a comprehensive national project ensuring the participation of all Syrians in shaping their future, free from exclusion and division.

In this context, Yasser Suleiman, Co–Vice President of the Democratic Peoples’ Council in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, told ANHA Agency:

“Syrians are looking forward to building a new system that represents all components of society without exclusion or marginalization—through an inclusive national dialogue leading to the drafting of a unified national constitution that honors the sacrifices of the Syrian people and guarantees freedoms, justice, and broad political participation.”

He added that, “Reorganizing the military and security institutions represents one of the key priorities for the upcoming stage, ensuring these institutions fulfill their role in protecting the homeland and citizens, preserving national security and stability, and remaining detached from personal freedoms and individual privacy.”

Suleiman underscored the necessity of making these institutions a source of reassurance and justice for society.

He also stressed the need to expand the powers of local administrations and local governance, enabling the residents of each province to manage their own affairs through free elections for municipal and provincial councils.

He clarified that, “This orientation does not mean political decentralization or federalism, but rather the implementation of administrative decentralization—linking the provinces to the central government in Damascus within a clear constitutional framework that ensures stability and balanced development.”

Regarding natural resources and agricultural wealth, Suleiman emphasized the importance of fair distribution among all Syrians, with an appropriate share allocated to the producing regions. He said this principle must be enshrined in the forthcoming national constitution to ensure economic justice and balanced development.

Suleiman further noted that regional and international rivalries continue to affect the Syrian file and hinder internal understandings. However, he expressed confidence in the Syrian people’s ability to overcome differences through dialogue and reliance on their national spirit to restore cohesion to the Syrian social fabric.

Concluding his statement, the Co–Vice President of the Democratic Peoples’ Council in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria affirmed that building the Syrian individual is the foundation of rebuilding the homeland, calling on all Syrians to work together to build a modern, democratic, and advanced Syria worthy of the sacrifices of its people and capable of regaining its rightful place among nations.

He added: “We may need the support of others, but the responsibility for rebuilding our homeland rests first and foremost on us, the Syrians.”
