Wide praise for Ilham Ahmed, Mazloum Abdi’s participation in Munich Security Conference

The participation of the commander of the SDF, Mazloum Abdi, and the Co-Chair of the Foreign Relations Department of the Autonomous Administration, Ilham Ahmed generated considerable reactions on social media, where activists and politicians on Facebook described the move as a positive international signal for the Kurds in Syria and an indication of important developments in their legal and political status.

Former Chair of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, Nadine Maenza, praised the visit, writing: "We are pleased to see the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces, Mazloum Abdi, and the Co-Chair of the Foreign Relations Department of the Autonomous Administration of Northeast Syria, Ilham Ahmed, join Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Hassan al-Shaibani in a meeting with Minister Rubio on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference."

She added: "A strong message from Foreign Minister Marco Rubio that the Kurds of North and East Syria are an integral part of Syria."

Activist and politician Taha al-Hamed noted that the visit represents a reassuring European-American step for the Kurds, writing: "Think about it: the invitation of the General and Ilham Ahmed to the Munich Security Conference was the first reassuring European-American step for the Kurds, signaling that Rojava’s Kurdish region has gained a new legal status within the Syrian state. This means that constitutional amendments consistent with agreements with the Kurds are now confirmed."

Meanwhile, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) director Rami Abdel Rahman emphasized the political importance of the visit, stating: "One of the most important achievements of al-Sharaa is uniting the Kurdish people and garnering international support for Syrian Kurds."

Activist Mala Asmar expressed hopes for a better future for Syria, saying: "All the best to Syrians and to a new Syria, moving toward more safety, reconstruction, and the respect and guarantee of the rights of all components and sects in Syria."

The conference began yesterday in its 62nd session and will continue for three consecutive days, with the participation of around fifty heads of state and government from around the world, in addition to the participation of Ilham Ahmed, Co-Chair of the Foreign Relations Department of the Autonomous Administration, and Mazloum Abdi, Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces.
