Warnings of flooding on Khabur River; calls for caution

Syria has witnessed heavy rainfall and a strong storm over the past two days, causing water to accumulate in many areas and some rivers to overflow. Several camps have also been damaged by the resulting torrents.

The Director of Water Resources in Hasaka, Abdel Aziz Amin, warned residents along the banks of the Khabur River today of the possibility of flooding in the coming hours, urging them to take precautions due to the significant rise in water levels and the rapid flow.

In a statement to the media outlets, Amin made clear that the flow rate in the Khabur River has exceeded 50 cubic meters per second, due to the torrential floods caused by the heavy rains and the rising water levels in the river's tributaries, particularly the Jarjab and Zarkan rivers.

The Director of Water Resources called on residents living along the riverbanks, from the villages of Tell Tamer, through the Meridian and Nashwa neighborhoods in Hasaka city, to the Southern Hasaka Dam, to be vigilant and take necessary precautions in anticipation of a further rise in water levels.

The rising water level of the Khabur River on Monday morning forced the closure of the M4 international highway again west of Tell Tamer, after traffic had partially resumed following its recent reopening. The closure was due to flooding in parts of the road.

The M4 is a vital artery in Northern Syria, connecting the cities of Hasaka, Raqqa, Kobani, and Manbij to Aleppo. It serves as a major route for transporting civilians and goods between North and East Syria and other parts of the country.
