U.S. Envoy: Sykes-Picot split Syria for colonial goals

Foreign intervention and the division of Syria under the Sykes-Picot Agreement caused the suffering of peoples by imposing ink-drawn borders and shaping the region for colonial objectives. The U.S. envoy believes that the solution must be based on partnerships and diplomacy rooted in respect, with an end to foreign interventions.

The U.S. President’s Special Envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, affirmed that the division of Syria was a historic mistake that has cost generations, stressing that the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime would pave the way for a genuine peace process. He emphasized that the solution in Syria must not be imposed from outside.

In a post on the platform "X," Barrack referred to the century-old mistake when the West imposed maps and borders with a pen—an allusion to the Sykes-Picot Agreement—and asserted that “the era of Western intervention is over.”

He added that the future belongs to “regional solutions, partnerships, and diplomacy based on respect,” citing former President Donald Trump’s speech in Riyadh, which emphasized the end of Western interventionist lectures in the Middle East.

He noted that Syria’s tragedy “was born from division,” and that the solution begins with dignity, unity, and cooperation with regional countries without bypassing them.

Barrack pointed out that the fall of the Assad regime opens the door to peace, and that lifting sanctions would allow Syrians to discover a new path toward prosperity and security.
