An informed diplomatic source in Turkey revealed to Reuters today that the United States intends to appoint the US ambassador to Ankara, Thomas Barrack, as special envoy for Syria.

US Secretary of State Mark Rubio explained in his testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee yesterday that he had authorized US embassy staff in Ankara, including Ambassador Barrack, to engage with local officials in Syria to assess the needs of the population and the assistance required on the ground.

Thomas Barrack is an American diplomat and businessman of Lebanese descent. He held prominent positions, including Deputy Undersecretary of the Interior during the Reagan administration and Chairman of Trump's inaugural committee in 2016.

He was appointed Ambassador to Turkey in 2025 and is the founder of Digital Bridge, which manages assets exceeding $80 billion in 19 countries.
