UNICEF warns of impact of escalation in Iran on children

The regional office expressed deep concern over the fatal consequences of the military escalation in Iran for children, noting that 180 children have been killed and many more injured during the recent attacks.

In a press statement, the organization explained that “among the victims were 168 girls who were killed in a strike targeting the Shajarat Tayyiba Primary School for Girls in the city of Minab in southern Iran on February 28, while classes were in session.”

Reports indicated that most of the victims were schoolgirls aged between 7 and 12.

UNICEF added that 12 other children were killed in different schools across five locations in Iran, stressing that children and schools must be protected under international humanitarian law.

The organization also reported that at least 20 schools and 10 hospitals were damaged, disrupting children’s access to education and essential healthcare services.

UNICEF called on all parties to urgently fulfill their obligations under international law and ensure the protection of civilians, especially children.
