UN official comments on reports of looting in Kobani

The spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, clarified that the UN is monitoring allegations of looting in the city of Kobani and its surrounding countryside, emphasizing that the organization's teams are present to provide protection and services to civilians.

During a press conference on Monday, he added that "the situation in northern Syria has seen a decrease in the intensity of fighting following the January 30 agreement, although some 160,000 people remained displaced as of February 3, with power outages and disruptions to water, education, and communications services."

Dujarric noted that "10 humanitarian aid convoys, comprising 154 trucks, reached the Qamishli and Kobani areas between January 25 and February 5," stressing that these efforts aim to alleviate the suffering of civilians.

In response to local media reports alleging widespread looting in approximately 70 villages in the Kobani countryside, Dujarric stated, "I haven't received that information. This doesn't mean it didn't happen, nor does it mean it did; it simply means I haven't received that information."
