UN High Commissioner for Human Rights: We will support an inclusive political process that involves all Syrians

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk announced that he discussed with Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus all the challenges and the issue of building a free country for all Syrians to live in dignity.

 Following his discussions with Al-Sharaa, at the news conference, Türk praised the courage, determination and resolve he saw in Syrians despite all the pain and shocks, saying that the UN office will support an inclusive political process for Syrians.

 The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights added, "This is my first visit to Syria, and it is a historic visit and a historic moment to listen to everyone's concerns, and the UN office in Damascus has been working to monitor all human rights violations."

 He added that there is much work to be done and the Syrian people do need all the support, adding: "Work should be done to lift the sanctions on the Syrian people."

 He underlined that perpetrators of crimes against human rights must be brought to account and justice should be achieved without any discrimination, since the degree of the crime is very great.

 He called for a process of transferring power in a way that achieves justice because it enhances human rights, and there must be a process that heals wounds and enhances confidence. He also pointed out that women are suffering in Syria and there is a lot of inequality, and Syria must achieve dignity for all without discrimination and move towards stability.
