During a press conference held in the Iraqi capital Baghdad on the sidelines of the Arab Summit, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the Kurds form an essential part of Syria's national fabric, urging that they be treated as equal citizens in rights and duties.

Guterres added, "There is a Kurdish majority in parts of Syria, and they are part of the Syrian people. When I spoke with the Syrian government in past years, I emphasized the need to work with the Kurds as Syrian citizens."

He stressed that all communities within Syria must be involved in shaping the country’s future, noting that lifting sanctions on Syria could pave the way for positive developments on both political and humanitarian levels.

These statements are considered among the most prominent positions by the United Nations in support of including Syrian Kurds in the political process.
