UN calls for probe into Sweida violence

The United Nations has called for independent, swift, and transparent investigations into the violence that erupted between local factions in Sweida and forces affiliated with Syria’s transitional government, urging an end to the bloodshed.

The city of Sweida remains without electricity or water, with weak communication networks, according to Rayan Marouf, editor-in-chief of the local "Sweida 24" website, as reported to Agence France-Presse. He added, "The humanitarian situation is catastrophic; there’s not even milk for children."

On Friday, Israel announced it is preparing to send humanitarian aid to Sweida worth approximately $600,000, including food rations and medical supplies, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In Geneva, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, stated, "The bloodshed and violence must stop, and the protection of all individuals must be the absolute priority."

He added, "Independent, swift, and transparent investigations must be conducted into all acts of violence."
