Turkish attacks deprive thousands of students of education in Jazira canton

4,300 female and male students in Jazira canton were deprived of their right to education, due to Turkey and its mercenaries occupying dozens of villages and schools and destroying other schools.

The Education Authority in the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria announced on Wednesday, August 14, that the new school year will begin on September 1, and the first semester will end on January 2, 2025, and the second semester will begin on January 15 and end on May 15.

4,100 schools in North and East Syria are preparing to receive about 900,000 female and male students, with the start of this year's school year with a teaching staff of 41,000, and a total number of workers in the educational sector of approximately 50,000 workers, according to the deputy co-chairmanship of the Education Authority in North and East Syria, Azad Barazi.

On the other hand, thousands of students are still deprived of their right to education, due to the inability of the current schools and educational centers in both Tal Tamr and Zerghan to accommodate all of them, due to the war conditions in the region.

According to the co-chair of the Tal Tamr Schools Directorate, Khader Mizr al-Aliwi, "the educational system in the city has been severely damaged since the beginning of the Turkish attacks in 2019."

Al-Aliwi added: "The attacks of the Turkish occupation and its mercenaries resulted in their seizure of 26 schools and the destruction of 20 others." He pointed out that 83 schools are still open in the city and its countryside, but about 1,500 children out of more than 6,000 have been deprived of their right to education.

In previous school years, the Education Authority provided a number of prefabricated rooms to be converted into temporary schools, but these rooms were not enough to accommodate the full number of students.

In the city of Zerghan, located north of Tal Tamr and on the forntlines with the areas occupied by Turkey, schools are frequently targeted. Turkish shelling has disrupted the education process and closed 5 schools completely. The Turkish occupation has also turned 29 schools in the villages it occupied from the city of Zerghan into military points, while previous attacks have destroyed 4 schools.

According to the Directorate of Schools in the city of Zerghan, about 2,800 students out of more than 8,500 are experiencing difficulties in obtaining education.
