Turkey monitors US efforts to establish Syria deconfliction mechanism

Turkey’s Ministry of National Defence called for an immediate halt to Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, saying it is closely monitoring developments amid a US effort to establish a mechanism to prevent clashes between Israel, Turkey, and Syria.

The ministry said today that Israeli attacks on Syria must stop as soon as possible, adding that it is following the US initiative to establish a deconfliction mechanism.

It added that Ankara has not yet received an official request to participate in the mechanism, noting that any such request would be evaluated in coordination with relevant authorities.

On August 18, US Special Envoy for Syria and Iraq Thomas Barrack announced that Washington was working to establish a mechanism aimed at preventing clashes between Israel, Turkey, and Syria following an Israeli strike on the Abo al-Duhur military base in the Idlib countryside. Barrack said the strike was carried out without prior notification to Turkey, which could have prompted Ankara to respond and potentially led to wider escalation.
