A significant meeting recently took place between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and a delegation from the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (HEDEP), commonly referred to as the lmrali Delegation. This meeting formed part of ongoing dialogue and peace initiatives launched by the leader Abdullah Ocalan. The party described the exchange as constructive and fruitful, marked by a spirit of mutual understanding and optimism regarding Turkey’s future.

This engagement reflects a renewed willingness to enhance dialogue among various political and societal actors within Turkey. It follows a series of meetings between the Imrali delegation and a wide range of political parties and civil society organizations both in Turkey and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

On February 27, the leader Abdullah Ocalan issued a new appeal for peace following discussions between his representatives and the Imrali delegation. The delegation, acting on leader Ocalan’s behalf, had held consultations with political forces, official institutions, community organizations, and Kurdish political groups across Turkey, Northern Kurdistan, and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

The leader’s call for peace and dialogue has drawn substantial international attention. His message—urging disarmament and the establishment of a democratic society—was welcomed by major international stakeholders, democratic movements, and human rights organizations, including the United Nations, which viewed it as a potential turning point for resolving conflicts and promoting regional stability.

The statement has also reinvigorated political and societal debate in Turkey, seen by many as a foundational step toward developing a new social contract grounded in democracy and interethnic cooperation. It is anticipated that this initiative could bring about meaningful transformation across the region.

Particularly notable is leader Ocalan’s political philosophy on women’s liberation and the rights of oppressed peoples. His ideas have been hailed as a global model for progressive social and political change, emphasizing the importance of building inclusive social and economic foundations that empower diverse identities and marginalized communities.

The leader’s renewed call for peace and dialogue holds profound implications across the region—particularly for Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. In Turkey, the proposal is seen as a strategic opportunity to recalibrate both domestic and foreign policy, improve relations with the Kurdish population, and potentially revitalize the economy through regional cooperation, including projects like the Development Road Initiative in partnership with Iraq and Syria.

In Syria, the appeal has opened new possibilities for democratic forces, especially following the reported agreement between SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi and Syrian government representative Ahmad al-Sharaa. This is viewed as a step toward a potential political transformation that could stabilize the Kurdish question and democratic forces in Syria.

In Iraq, the appeal is perceived as a chance to strengthen cooperation between the Iraqi government and Kurdish factions, particularly in the Kurdistan Region. In Iran, the response to Öcalan’s call will likely depend on the extent to which the Iranian government is willing to engage with Kurdish demands. A constructive response could significantly improve Kurdish-Iranian relations.

At this critical juncture, Turkey faces a historic responsibility to respond constructively to leader Abdullah Ocalan’s call for peace and a democratic society. Several concrete measures are expected:

 1. Immediate cessation of military operations targeting Kurdish regions, both domestically and in Syria and Iraq, as a gesture of serious intent toward peace.

 2. Release of the leader to enable him to directly participate in and guide the peace process.

 3. Opening of official dialogue channels with Kurdish political parties, including the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), with the aim of achieving a comprehensive political settlement.

Furthermore, Turkey is encouraged to implement democratic reforms that safeguard Kurdish rights and promote broader democratization. Such measures would help build a cohesive, multicultural society and offer a sustainable framework for peace.
