Transitional govt. assaults, arrests protesters in Homs, Banyas

Transitional government forces assaulted protesters in the cities of Homs and Banyas during demonstrations called in response to appeals by Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal, head of the Supreme Alawite Council in Syria and the diaspora, demanding the right to self-determination and federalism.

Today, a gathering of protesters took place at the Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque square in the Wadi al-Dhahab neighborhood of Homs, following the call by Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal, in the aftermath of the recent bombing in the city.

According to ANHA correspondent in the Zahraa neighborhood of Homs, women were physically assaulted to prevent them from participating.

Tensions escalated as transitional government forces attempted to forcibly disperse the gathering and imposed a siege on the area, preventing protesters from entering or leaving the square. Several surrounding roads were also blocked.

Transitional government forces also assaulted protesters with beatings and gunfire in the coastal cities of Jableh and Banyas.

These gatherings are part of a series of protests called by Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal, demanding the right to self-determination and federalism, amid ongoing attempts by the transitional government to restrict protest movements and prevent protesters from reaching gathering sites.
