Local sources reported that contact was lost with three brothers from the city of Salkhad, south of Sweida. They were Omar Anwar Jabour and his two brothers, Mudar and Amer, on Wednesday while returning from the town of Sahnaya in the Damascus countryside to Sweida via Daraa city.

The sources indicated that the family of the three brothers, who work in passenger transport, lost contact with them. It later emerged that they had been kidnapped in areas under the control of the Damascus government forces in the Daraa countryside.

According to the sources, the last checkpoint they were able to verify was the Mankat al-Hatab checkpoint, at the entrance to Daraa city from the Damascus side. Their car was later found abandoned between the towns of Kahil and al-Taybeh, east of Daraa, with no trace of them.

The city of Daraa has witnessed a marked increase in kidnappings and targeting of civilians on the roads, some of them motivated by sectarianism, including women and children. This comes amidst the years-long state of security chaos, particularly after the Damascus government forces attacked the city of Sweida in mid-July, closing the international highway to Damascus. This has made Daraa the only humanitarian corridor for the region. Other kidnappings are carried out for ransom.
