Alawite Islamic Council calls for international action over violations in Damascus’ Soumariya

The Alawite Islamic Supreme Council in Syria and the Diaspora has strongly condemned what it described as the “flagrant violations” committed by the Damascus government in the Soumariya district of Damascus, stressing that the storming of homes and the forced eviction of residents constitutes “a crime rooted in sectarian discrimination.”

In an official statement, the Council said that government-affiliated forces expelled families solely because of their Alawite identity, disregarding official legal documents proving their ownership of property.

The statement added that the raids were accompanied by assaults, sectarian insults, and even targeting of women—actions it described as “barbaric and in clear violation of humanitarian norms and international humanitarian law.”

The Council underlined that these violations “are not isolated incidents but part of a systematic policy of repression and exclusion,” holding the Damascus government fully responsible for the safety of civilians.

It further called for urgent international measures, including direct engagement with the European Union, the United Nations, and human rights organizations. The Council announced preparations for a legal case supported by photos, videos, and witness testimonies to be submitted to relevant authorities in pursuit of an official investigation.

Additionally, the statement urged exposing these practices through independent media outlets and working closely with the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights to monitor and follow up on the case.
