Thousands of residents of the Jazira today accompanied the body of Sipan Hasakeh, whose real name was Sami Haso, to his final resting place at the Djiwar Martyr’s Shrine in the village of Al-Dawudiya in Hasakah. Sipan, a fighter with the Hasakah Brigade, was killed by an armed group after being abducted on the 10th of this month.

The funeral began with a minute of silence in honor of the martyrs. Walida Bouti, a member of the Martyrs’ Families Council, then delivered a speech expressing condolences to the martyr’s family and calling for the preservation of the gains achieved through the sacrifices of the martyrs.

For his part, the co-chair of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), Gharib Haso, pointed to the continuation of painful and bloody events in the region, saying, “Today, Kobani prison; yesterday, martyr Sipan,” describing what happened as a “brutal and inhumane act.”

He said Sipan had been a symbol of humanity and the freedom of peoples, and that he had fought ISIS mercenaries in defense of the region’s peoples, humanity, and people of different ethnicities, communities, religions and beliefs before ultimately being killed in a horrific manner.

He said Sipan’s martyrdom by an armed group was neither a tribal nor a personal matter, but rather part of external policies and practices aimed at breaking the will of the region’s peoples and destroying Syria’s future. He noted that Kurds and Arabs had lived together and defended Syria, with both sides having martyrs and strong ties.

He held the transitional government responsible for the fire at Kobani prison and the deaths and injuries of dozens of people, explaining that the fire broke out after General Security took responsibility for protecting the prison in Kobani. He described the incident as “a serious matter.”

The PYD co-chair warned the region’s peoples against being drawn into policies of treachery and betrayal, expressing confidence in the awareness of the region’s communities in confronting such policies.

For his part, Ahmed Haso, Sipan’s uncle, said the martyr had defended the peoples of the region without discrimination and had worked to protect his homeland from terrorism.

He called on Kurds in Rojava to remain patient and act with awareness, warning them not to be drawn into attempts by “mercenaries” to plunge the region into a new war.

The ceremony concluded with the reading of the martyr’s document and its handover to his family before his body was laid to rest amid ululations and chants of “Martyrs live forever.”
