Syrian women activists seek to strengthen women’s role in political, public life

The Damascus office of the SDC held a series of meetings with Syrian women’s rights activists and figures to discuss the situation of Syrian women and the challenges they face, as well as political developments and prospects for joint women’s rights work, according to the SDC’s official website.

The meetings included feminist activists Dr. Abeer Suleiman, Lama al-Husseiniya and Dr. Amal Jarkasi. The participants discussed the importance of increasing Syrian women’s participation in political and public life and ensuring their active presence in peacebuilding processes and shaping Syria’s future, including the transitional justice process. They stressed the need to ensure that women’s issues and rights are taken into account throughout the stages of truth-seeking, reparations and the pursuit of justice.

The participants also stressed the need to clearly safeguard Syrian women’s rights in the constitution and laws, uphold the principle of equal citizenship and non-discrimination, and ensure women’s political, civil, social and economic rights, strengthening their role as active partners in building Syria.

The discussions also addressed ways to expand coordination among women activists and women’s organizations and create shared spaces for dialogue and action, contributing to unified efforts on women’s issues and strengthening their presence in various national processes.

At the conclusion of the meetings, they stressed the importance of continuing dialogue and consultation among women’s political forces and organizations and working to develop a shared vision that places women’s rights and their active participation at the core of any future political, constitutional or societal process in Syria.
