A UN report released yesterday stated that the Syrian Interim Government handed over to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) more than 34 sealed boxes containing documents related to the chemical weapons program developed by the former regime. The OPCW has documented and analyzed these materials in preparation for translation and further study.

During a regular Security Council meeting, the Deputy High Representative of the UN for Disarmament Affairs, Adediji Ebo, explained that since March 2025, OPCW teams have collected approximately 19 samples and more than 6,000 documents from over 20 sites visited, and have also conducted interviews with former experts. He added that further field visits to additional sites have been temporarily suspended due to the ongoing conflict in the region, while the teams continue to review the documents and conduct interviews.

Ebo noted that the Syrian Interim Government is "actively cooperating with the OPCW's technical team to clarify the scope of the former chemical weapons program and ensure Syria's long-term compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention," calling on the international community to "support disarmament efforts to ensure that Syria is rid of all chemical weapons
