Syrian Energy Ministry warns of rising Euphrates water levels

The Syrian Energy Ministry warned residents of Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor governorates, particularly those living near the Euphrates River, of rising water levels and increased flow rates, urging them to exercise caution, stay away from the river and refrain from swimming.

The ministry said the Euphrates Dam’s General Establishment will begin gradually increasing water releases from the Kdieran Dam as of Saturday, August 15, 2026, raising the discharge from 600 to 800 cubic meters per second, based on water and operational data and monitoring of the river’s course.

The ministry said the measures come amid a continued rise in the amount of water flowing into the Euphrates from the Turkish side, which has exceeded 1,200 cubic meters per second for around 10 days. Inflows are expected to continue rising through the end of the month.

It added that staff from the Euphrates Dam’s General Establishment are monitoring water flows around the clock and taking the necessary operational measures to ensure the safety of facilities and residents and maintain the security of areas along the Euphrates River.
