Sweida's suffering to secure bread continues

The majority of public bakeries in Sweida and its countryside have completely stopped operating on Sunday due to a shortage of flour and the lack of new supplies, exacerbating the residents' difficulty securing bread.

ANHA correspondents in Sweida reported that bakeries in the cities, towns, and countryside of Sweida, Shahba, and Salkhad, as well as a number of private bakeries, have not distributed bread at all and have not opened their doors due to a shortage of flour since Saturday night.

With public bakeries closed, some private bakeries that had announced bread availability witnessed large gatherings of citizens, receiving a bag of bread can take between two and four hours, sometimes longer waiting.

According to residents, the bread crisis in Sweida is due to the Syrian transitional government's halt in supplying the region with wheat since the siege imposed in mid-July, following the recent military escalation. This has left bakeries almost entirely dependent on aid provided by the World Food Program and the Red Crescent.

Two shipments, estimated at approximately 402 tons, arrived in Sweida and its countryside last week, while the daily need is no less than 120 tons, according to bakery sources.
