HASAKAH

Today, displaced residents of Serekaniye and villages in the Tal Tamr countryside, residing in Al-Tala’i and Washokani camps in Hasakah, staged a protest in the camps’ main square, calling for their return to their areas to be expedited, those who have seized their homes to be removed, and Turkish bases preventing their return to be dismantled. They also called for adequate compensation to enable them to repair their destroyed homes.

The protesters held signs reading, “We demand that the return be expedited before winter arrives” and “We demand the removal of mines.” They also carried signs bearing the names of their villages, including Al-Rubai’at, Al-Manajir and Al-Tawila, while children held signs reading, “It is our right to learn.”

The protesters chanted slogans calling for an expedited return and demanding that their children’s right to education in schools be guaranteed. They also called for financial compensation for the damage to their homes and urged the transitional government to remove those who have seized their homes and provide the necessary conditions for their return.

The protests and sit-ins come amid the continued suffering of displaced people in the camps, as concerns grow that their return could be delayed into the winter.
