Senior Russian official: Presence of Turkish forces in Syria hinders normalizing relations

 The Special Representative of the Russian President to Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, announced that there has been no progress on the issue of the withdrawal of Turkish forces from Syrian territory, considering that “their presence in Syria hinders the normalization of Syrian-Turkish relations.”

He added: “No, there is no progress. The Turks unofficially announce that they are ready for this and do not intend to keep any of their military units, and under the appropriate circumstances, they will be ready to withdraw, but what are the appropriate circumstances for this matter, especially in the context of supporting the Syrian opposition?” ".

Lavrentiev revealed "the existence of quadripartite contacts between the security services of Russia, Syria, Turkey, and Iran, ruling out holding them at the level of defense ministers now."

Lavrentiev said: “Contacts are currently taking place between representatives of the intelligence services of Russia, Syria, Turkey and Iran in a quadripartite manner, and it is too early to talk about such talks between the defense ministers.”
