SDC receives Swedish Political delegation, discusses developments in Syrian file

The Co-Chair of the Syrian Democratic Council, Leila Qara Man, the Co-Chair of the Council’s Office of Relations, Hassan Mohammad Ali, and the Co-Chair of the Council’s Media Office, Shira Ossi, received a political delegation from Sweden.

The delegation included Jonas Sjöstedt, Member of the European Parliament for the Swedish Left Party, and Yekbun Alp, member of the party’s leadership and head of its foreign relations office.

According to the Council’s website, the meeting addressed the latest political developments in Syria and ways to support efforts aimed at consolidating stability and strengthening a political solution.

The discussion emphasized the importance of implementing the January 29 agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Interim Government, considering it a fundamental step toward halting bloodshed and protecting civilians. Both sides stressed the need to adhere to its provisions in order to de-escalate tensions and prevent further violence across various Syrian regions.

The two sides also discussed the importance of Syrian political forces assuming their national responsibilities during this sensitive phase and working to formulate a shared approach that would pave the way for a comprehensive intra-Syrian dialogue leading to sustainable solutions reflecting the aspirations of the Syrian people.

Both parties underscored the necessity of ensuring the safe and dignified return of refugees and internally displaced persons to their areas, as well as lifting the siege imposed on the city of Kobani, in order to secure regional stability and alleviate civilian suffering.

They further stressed the pivotal role of women in the political process and the need to fully guarantee their rights in any future Syrian constitution, ensuring their effective participation in decision-making at all levels. The vital role of youth was also emphasized, along with the importance of their political and social empowerment as a force for change and stability.

The two sides pointed out that any successful constitutional process must guarantee the rights of all Syrian components without exception, uphold the principle of equal citizenship, and reflect the country’s national, religious, and cultural diversity.

For her part, Lelya Qara Man, Co-Chair of the Syrian Democratic Council, stressed the importance of advancing the transitional process in Syria and the need to establish a political system based on decentralization, pluralism, and democracy through a constitution that enshrines national partnership and lays the foundation for a new phase of sustainable stability.
