SDC: March 12 uprising proved that change's will, stronger than repression

Today, the SDC issued a written statement, published on its official website, commemorating the twenty-first anniversary of the uprising of March 12, 2004, and the text of the statement reads as follows:

"Today marks the twenty-first anniversary of the uprising of 12 March 2004, which marked a milestone in the struggle of the Kurdish people against injustice and tyranny, as the Baathist regime confronted peaceful demonstrators with bullets and arrests, continuing its repressive approach.

That uprising was a loud cry against injustice, sowing the seeds of change and removing the walls of fear, paving the way for the Syrian revolution that began in March 2011.

Today, in a new historical circumstance, Syrians are turning a page of tyranny after the fall of the Baathist regime last December, to begin a new phase based on justice, national partnership and respect for pluralism.

Events have proven that the will to change is stronger than the tools of oppression, and that remembering this anniversary carries with it precious lessons, confirming that sacrifices accumulate a legacy of struggle.

We, at the Syrian Democratic Council, reaffirm our commitment to work for a democratic, pluralistic Syria that guarantees rights, preserves dignity, and puts a definitive end to the tragedies that Syrians have endured for decades.

The road to a better future passes through strengthening national partnership, consolidating the values of coexistence and peace, and embarking on a political building based on historical justice.

Glory and eternity to the martyrs of freedom, and victory to the will of the peoples."
