SDC condemns attack targeting civilian bus on Damascus–Sweida road

The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) condemned the attack that targeted a bus carrying civilians on the Damascus–Sweida road, which claimed the lives of two people and injured others, including women and children. The Council described it as a direct assault on the country’s security and stability at a time when Syria is in dire need of solidarity and civil peace. It called for an immediate investigation to hold the perpetrators accountable and urged for an inclusive national dialogue to end the cycle of violence and promote peace.

In a statement issued today, the SDC denounced “in the strongest terms the heinous crime that targeted a bus carrying civilians on the Damascus–Sweida road, which resulted in the martyrdom of several martyrs and injuries among women and children.”

The attack was described as “a heinous crime that reflects a grave disregard for the sanctity of human life and an attempt to destabilize the country and undermine its unity at a critical stage that requires strengthening security and civil peace.”

The SDC extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded. It called on “the transitional government to assume its legal, security, and moral responsibilities by launching an immediate and transparent investigation to uncover the perpetrators, bring them to justice, and ensure the protection of civilians in all areas without discrimination.”

The Council stressed that “such incidents, regardless of their motives, affect all Syrians and threaten what remains of the foundations of civil peace, which is the cornerstone of any inclusive national project.” It emphasized that the continuation of violence serves only the forces of extremism and division.

It also noted that combating terrorism, extremism, and violence is an essential part of Syrians’ struggle for freedom and peace, and called for coordination among national forces to confront these challenges.

The Council renewed its call for launching an inclusive national dialogue that brings together all political and social forces without exclusion, describing it as the realistic path to end the cycle of bloodshed and build trust among Syrians on the basis of justice and equal citizenship.

In conclusion, the Council stressed the need to end media incitement and hate speech, affirming that the media should serve as a bridge for awareness and responsibility. It reiterated its commitment to protecting civilians and promoting the values of peace, diversity, and justice in Syria.
