Reuters: Syria considering providing military aid to Saudi Arabia against Houthis

A U.S. official and a Syrian official told Reuters that Syria is cautiously considering providing military assistance to Saudi Arabia amid the escalating war against the Houthis in Yemen.

According to the U.S. official, Saudi Arabia has asked Syria to deploy forces to participate in fighting the Houthis, while the Syrian president discussed the issue during his visit to Riyadh.

The options under consideration include providing defensive support to protect the kingdom from attacks, or deploying Syrian forces to participate in offensive operations alongside Saudi-backed Yemeni forces.

A Syrian diplomat told Reuters that Damascus strongly stands with Saudi Arabia in the face of Houthi attacks, noting that the government’s focus remains primarily on domestic priorities, particularly recovering from the effects of the war.

The diplomat added that any Saudi request for military cooperation or an exchange of expertise would be made exclusively through official channels and within the framework of bilateral agreements between the two countries.
