The Syrian transitional government today denied reports that it was considering sending Syrian military forces to Yemen to participate in fighting against the Houthis, stressing that its priorities “are focused on stability and rebuilding the country, not opening new fronts.”

Presidential media adviser Ahmad Mowaffaq Zaidan said: “Reports circulating about sending Syrian forces to Yemen are false and have no basis,” stressing that his country’s policy is based on “stability, peace and cooperation, not opening new fronts.”

The Syrian Ministry of Information, for its part, confirmed that “Damascus’ priority at the current stage is to rebuild the country and strengthen its institutions, alongside cooperation with partners in reconstruction efforts and improving the living conditions of Syrians.”

The Syrian denial came after reports emerged about the possible participation of Syrian forces in military operations in Yemen, raising questions about the nature of the role Damascus could play in regional developments.

On Wednesday, the Axios website quoted three US officials as saying that “Saudi Arabia and Syria are holding talks about sending Syrian forces to Yemen to participate in a counteroffensive against the Houthis.”

According to the website, President Ahmad al-Sharaa is seriously considering the proposal but has not made a final decision.

Axios quoted the officials as saying that “the discussions are primarily taking place between Saudi Arabia and Syria, with the two countries consulting the administration of US President Donald Trump, which does not oppose such a move in principle.”
