As May 18 approaches—a day recognized as Martyrs' Day by the Kurdish liberation movement and the Kurdish people—the residents of NE Syria lit candles today at the graves of martyrs in various areas across the region.
Through this act, they commemorated their martyrs—those who sacrificed their lives in different times and places across NE Syria and other parts of Kurdistan.
This day was declared Martyrs' Day by the Kurdish liberation movement during the first congress of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which was held on November 26–27, 1978, in the village of Fis, part of the Lice district in the Amed (Diyarbakir) province.
The date marks the martyrdom of the leader Haki Karer, who was assassinated on May 18, 1977, over an ambush in the Dîlok area.
Throughout the month of May, the Kurdish people generally commemorate their martyrs through various cultural events, including meetings, candlelight ceremonies, and remembrance rituals.
