The Syrian Interim Government appointed a mayor for Jalabiya in Kobani, a move met with widespread rejection by local residents, as it contradicts agreements between the Syrian Democratic Forces, the Autonomous Administration, and the Interim Government, which affirm the right of the local population to manage their affairs and choose their officials.

Dozens of residents gathered in front of the municipality building to protest the decision, while security forces under the Interim Government obstructed the protesters’ movements and fired live rounds. Media outlets were also prevented from covering the event.
