Political parties in Kobani reject appointment of district director from outside city

Political parties statement read: “After the tragedies endured by the Kurdish people and all Syrian components at the hands of the former regime, followed by new wounds inflicted by the terrorist attacks of ISIS in 2014, Syrian communities united and made tremendous sacrifices in defense of their cities and villages. Kobani was at the forefront of these sacrifices, as its sons gave their finest youth as martyrs to liberate the city and protect civil peace within a homeland aspiring to freedom, democracy, and social justice.

Following the fall of the dictatorial regime, and based on the agreement signed between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the transitional government on January 29, Syria entered a new phase founded on decentralization and pluralism. The Kurdish issue has become part of national justice and a guarantee for the country’s stability.

However, the people of Kobani were recently surprised by the decision of the Aleppo Provincial Council to appoint a district director for Kobani from outside the city. Political forces in the city consider this a disregard for the sacrifices of its people and their role in protecting Syria.

On this basis, we, the political parties in Kobani, call for the cancellation of this decision. We stress that whoever assumes the administration of the district must be from its residents—those who have lived there and contributed to its development—and must genuinely represent all segments of society, in order to preserve Syria’s unity and stability.”
