Political Council of Central and Western Syria condemns Sqelbiya attack, calls for international investigation

In a written statement published on its social media pages, the council said that “sectarian armed groups from Qalaat al-Madiq carried out an attack on the cities of Sqelbiya and Mhardeh,” targeting civilians, public and private property, and religious symbols, in what it described as a clear violation of the culture of tolerance and coexistence.

The council stressed that the attack constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law, the Geneva Conventions, and the Hague Protocols, adding that “the leniency of the so-called General Security apparatus affiliated with Abu Mohammad al-Julani makes it legally and criminally complicit in these acts.”

It also pointed to repeated systematic attacks in several areas, reflecting what it described as a project that rejects others and threatens national stability, while affirming the right of residents to protect their areas and property.

The council called on international organizations to open an immediate investigation into these violations, document them, and implement UN resolutions to ensure a Syria for all based on equal citizenship, dignity, and the rule of law.
