Ongoing Turkish intervention in Syria, stirs tensions against SDF

Turkey continued to meddle in Syria’s internal matters, with the Turkish Foreign Minister claiming during a joint press conference with the Transitional Government’s Foreign Minister, Asaad al-Shaibani, that the SDF poses a threat to “Turkey’s security.” 

He called for the SDF to be removed from Syria’s political equation, contrary to the March 10 agreement, which envisioned integrating the SDF into Syria’s future military institutions.

The Turkish minister’s remarks were not limited to NE Syria; he also addressed southern regions, asserting that he does not want to “replicate the Sweida issue” across southern Syria, disregarding the massacres carried out by the Transitional Government forces in July that claimed over 2,000 lives.

Observers describe Turkey’s statements as blatant interference in Syrian sovereignty, exceeding mere political support to actively undermining internal agreements between the Transitional Government and the SDF. Ankara’s stance pressures the Transitional Government to align entirely with Turkish interests, escalating tensions and threatening civilian stability in the region.

This development was further exacerbated by the Transitional Government’s Foreign Minister, who echoed Turkey’s claims as reasons for not continuing the March 10 agreement, appeared to court Turkish favor, and sidestepped the realities on the ground with vague rhetoric about Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and preventing division.
