QAMISHLO

Families of prisoners in the city of Qamishlo organized a protest demanding the release of their relatives who have been detained by the Syrian interim government since early January.

Dozens of prisoners’ families gathered in Martyrs’ Square in Qamishlo carrying photos of their detained relatives and chanting slogans calling for their release and return home. The protest later turned into a march through the city streets.

The January 29 agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the interim government in Syria stipulates a phased exchange of prisoners between the two sides. Four batches of prisoners have been released so far: the first on March 10, the second on March 19, the third on April 11, and the fourth on May 8. A total of 1,032 prisoners held by the interim government in Syria were released during these exchanges.
