One Syrian killed, 27 injured over Turkish border incidents since early July

One person was killed and 27 others were injured since the beginning of July as a result of incidents involving the Turkish gendarmerie targeting Syrians attempting to cross the border.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported today that one person was killed and 27 Syrians sustained injuries and fractures of varying severity since the beginning of July while attempting to cross the Syrian–Turkish border through irregular routes.

According to the Observatory, the victims were from Hasakah, Deir ez-Zor, and Al-Raqqa. A young man from the southern countryside of Al-Hasakah was killed, while 16 people from Deir ez-Zor and 11 from Raqqa were injured.

The Observatory said that several young men were arrested and beaten after being detained by Turkish border guards (gendarmerie) while attempting to enter Turkish territory. They were later returned to the Syrian side of the border.

It also reported, citing recorded testimonies, that some detainees were subjected to beatings, torture, and ill-treatment. The Observatory called for investigations into the recurring incidents along the border and urged the protection of civilians and respect for international human rights laws.
