New violations of ceasefire in Sweida amid fears of escalation

Sweida witnessed a new ceasefire violation with heavy gunfire targeting the village of Ara from positions held by the Transitional Government forces, followed by a response from local Druze factions, amid growing concerns of escalation.

Today, Sunday, Sweida experienced a new breach of the ceasefire, marked by heavy machine gun fire targeting the village of Ara in the southwestern countryside. The fire originated from positions held by the Transitional Government forces in al-Burj area west of the village.

Local Druze factions responded to the attack, although there is no confirmed information regarding any casualties.

Earlier this month, on the 5th, the Sweida countryside witnessed similar violations from three fronts, most notably around the town of Ara, which came under intense fire from 23mm caliber machine guns originating from the towns of Kanaker and Kharbat Samir to the north of the town. Additionally, similar gunfire was reported from Tal Hadid towards the city of Sweida.

Intermittent clashes also erupted between the two sides along the Ara-Kharba axis southwest of Sweida, highlighting the fragility of the existing ceasefire and raising fears of a larger security escalation in the region.
