Netanyahu: we seek to establish demilitarized zone from Damascus to Mount Hermon

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed that Israel seeks to impose a demilitarized zone extending from Damascus to Mount Hermon, stressing that any potential agreement with the Syrian side must take Israel’s security principles into account.

Netanyahu stated today that Israel “wants to establish a demilitarized zone from Damascus to Mount Hermon,” adding that reaching an agreement with the Syrians is possible, but only while upholding Israel’s core principles.

During his visit to Sheba Medical Center, accompanied by soldiers from the 55th Brigade who were wounded in an exchange of fire in Syria, Netanyahu said:
"We are determined to defend Israeli towns near the borders, including the northern border."

He added that Israel expects Syria to create “a buffer, demilitarized zone from Damascus to the buffer area, and of course from the entrances of Mount Hermon up to its summit. We are maintaining these territories to ensure the security of Israeli citizens. This is our obligation. With good faith and an understanding of these principles, it is also possible to reach an agreement with the Syrians though we will adhere to our principles in all circumstances.”

This comes after the Israeli army announced that the forces stationed along the border are on high alert, both defensively and in preparation for any potential developments in Syria and Lebanon.

Meanwhile, the U.S. President called on the Israeli government on Monday to refrain from taking any actions that could hinder the course of political transition in Syria.
