National Guard: Child injured in shelling targeting western Sweida

The National Guard said government forces shelled western Sweida with mortars and 23mm machine guns, injuring a child with shrapnel, and confirmed that it responded to the sources of fire.

The command of the National Guard forces said today that Syrian transitional government forces fired mortar rounds and bursts from 23mm machine guns toward the western axis of Sweida city, injuring a child with shrapnel.

In a statement, the command said the shelling took place at 7:30 p.m. and targeted more than one direction. It said other damage was limited to property, while National Guard positions stationed along the axis engaged the sources of fire.

The National Guard command described the shelling as a “random attack targeting residential neighborhoods,” saying it was part of what it called a “retaliatory approach” pursued by the government in Damascus.

It stressed that such attacks “will not go unanswered,” adding that the response aims, according to the statement, to ensure the security of the area and the safety of its residents.
