Estimates conducted using a tool managed by the Spanish Carlos III Institute for Public Health Research showed that more than 1,100 deaths were linked to the 16-day heatwave that just ended in Spain.

The exact number of deaths attributed to the heatwave, which lasted from August 3 to 18, is 1,149, according to this system, called "Mortality Monitoring," which compiles the number of deaths in Spain on a daily basis and calculates the difference in deaths compared to the expected deaths based on recorded historical series, according to Agence France-Presse.
