Council of Religions, Beliefs presents its vision for new Syrian Constitution to UN

During the forum, the Council presented its vision for a new draft Syrian constitution that is consistent with the ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity of the Syrian people. The forum, hosted in the Reading Garden Hall and attended by representatives of political parties, community organizations, religious figures, academics, and civil society organizations, was held as part of the Council's efforts to be a unifying voice for all Syrian components and a step toward building a democratic state based on justice and equality.

In its statement, the Council affirmed that its constitutional draft aims to guarantee the rights and duties of all individuals and religions, consolidate the state's neutrality regarding beliefs, recognize the right of peoples and sects to preserve their national, religious, and cultural identities, and enhance the participation of youth and women in decision-making.

During an official meeting with UN representatives in Qamishlo, the Council delivered a copy of its final statement in Arabic and English. The UN representative confirmed receipt of the document and pledged to convey it to Special Envoy Geir Pedersen and the relevant authorities in the Security Council.

The forum witnessed extensive discussions among attendees, addressing the importance of drafting a constitution that reflects Syrian pluralism and protects minorities from marginalization and persecution. The discussion also addressed the protection of indigenous peoples from the risks of extinction and migration, ways to empower women and youth in political life and decision-making, and the affirmation that justice and equality are the only guarantees for the country's unity and democratic future.

The meeting concluded with several discussions that led to a general consensus that the Council's initiative represents an important step toward laying the foundations for a democratic constitution that guarantees the rights of all Syrians without discrimination and paves the way for building a pluralistic Syria based on national dignity and coexistence.
