More than 100 employees dismissed from general company for phosphates, mines in Tartus

More than 100 contracted employees have been dismissed from the General Company for Phosphates and Mines in Tartus, the majority of whom are from the Alawite community, in a move that has sparked widespread discontent.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the management of the General Company for Phosphates and Mines in Tartus, based on a directive issued by the Ministry of Energy, approved the dismissal of more than 100 contracted employees working with the Storage and Loading Directorate at the Port of Tartus.

It explained that the vast majority of those dismissed are from the Alawite community, including employees who had been in service for more than 20 years. This has caused widespread dissatisfaction among workers and their families, amid the absence of any official clarification regarding the reasons for the dismissals or the availability of alternative employment or financial compensation.

The Observatory confirmed that these measures are part of a series of mass dismissal decisions affecting various sectors of workers in the provinces of Latakia and Tartus in recent times, increasing social tension and economic concern in the region, particularly amid deteriorating economic conditions.
