The people of North and East Syria, specifically in the city of Qamishlo in Jazira Canton, as well as in the town of Sharan and the village of Kerk affiliated with the city of Serrin in Euphrates Canton, held large-scale celebrations on Wednesday, May 15, the annual Kurdish Language Day.

In this context, the Teacher Training Institute in Qamishlo organized a special celebration at the Mohammed Sheikho Center for Culture and Art, under the slogan: “Learning one’s mother tongue is a basic and natural right.”

Dozens of students, teachers, intellectuals, and local residents attended the event, wearing traditional Kurdish attire in an atmosphere filled with pride.

The event began with a moment of silence in tribute to the martyrs, followed by a speech by Ain Hayat Abbas, an administrator at the Teacher Training Institute, who congratulated the Kurdish people on this occasion and praised the sacrifices of the martyrs who gave their lives to keep the Kurdish language alive.

The celebration included theatrical, musical, and singing performances by well-known artistic groups such as Urkesh, Afrin, Kurdistan, and Shilan. The event concluded with Kurdish folk dance circles (Govend) to the tunes of traditional songs.

In the town of Sharan in Euphrates Canton, a similar public celebration was organized at the Martyr Sido Ahmed School. It was attended by members of the Autonomous Administration’s institutions, Kongra Star, teachers, students, and locals, all dressed in traditional Kurdish clothing.

During the celebration, Narin Khalil Muslim, the co-chair of the Teachers’ Union in Euphrates Canton, gave a speech in which she stated: “This day is a holiday for teachers to educate students. We dedicate it to Leader Abdullah Ocalan, the families of the martyrs, the teachers, and the students.” She pledged to continue the struggle for “our mother tongue.”

In the village of Kerk, affiliated with the city of Serrin, the celebration took place at the Martyr Djwan Kerk School. Hussein Muslim, an administrator at the Sirrin schools, delivered a speech saying: “Despite attempts to erase the Kurdish language through five phases of genocide, our language has been renewed and has become richer, and no one will be able to erase it.”

These celebrations featured poetry, songs, theatrical performances, folk dance shows, as well as photo and handicraft exhibitions prepared by students in honor of this occasion.
