Martyrs Mazloum and Akid: Pioneers of Kurdish Liberation

The "Week of Heroism" is recognized as a turning point in Kurdish history, spanning from March 21, when Martyr Mazloum Doğan set himself ablaze in defiance, to March 28, when Martyr Akid fired the first bullet against the enemy, thereby launching the armed struggle against an occupation force that rejects political dialogue and negotiation.

 In this context, the families of the guerrilla fighters underscored the historical importance of this period for Kurdish society, emphasizing how it contributed to securing Kurdish achievements and ensuring the survival of their identity against the policies of assimilation and extermination imposed by the occupiers of Kurdistan.

 Commitment to Resistance

 Hanifa Mohammed Hassan, the mother of the Kurdish freedom fighter Fatima Ismat Mohammed (nom de guerre: Sozdar), who joined the Kurdish Freedom Movement in 1999 following the abduction of leader Abdullah Ocalan, participated in the Newroz celebrations and declared: “We march forward, following in the footsteps of our martyrs.”

 Hanifa described the Week of Resistance as a period of great significance for the Kurdish people, stating: “We lost the two flames of freedom, among the most prominent Kurdish revolutionaries and self-sacrificing fighters, Akid and Mazloum Doğan. However, we transformed this pain into a source of hope, dedicating everything to continue their struggle.”

 She added: “Without them, we would not have reached this stage. We were confined to a mold imposed upon us by the colonizers of our land. Yet, with their emergence, Kurdish society gained confidence in itself and embarked on a long struggle against oppression.”

 A New Reality for the Kurdish People

 Similarly, Siham Haj Qanbar, the mother of Huriya Abdo, who joined the Kurdish Freedom Movement in 2021, linked the achievements of the Week of Heroism to the sacrifices of Martyrs Akid and Mazloum: “Thanks to their struggle and sacrifices, we have progressed, resisted submission to the occupiers of our land, and defended our existence. We continue to achieve new victories.”

 She reaffirmed the unwavering commitment to their legacy: “The Kurdish people have awakened from their slumber and taken decisive steps that have fundamentally transformed their reality. We fully adhere to any decision made by the Kurdish Freedom Movement because we trust its ability to resolve the Kurdish issue, establish peace, and ensure our survival.”

 The Week of Resistance: A Defining Chapter in Kurdish Liberation

 Vidan Qado, the mother of the freedom fighter Farida Sheikho (nom de guerre: Shilan Kobani), who joined the movement in 2022, expressed her pride in her daughter’s decision, stating: “It is the right choice—the path of dignity, the path of Martyrs Akid and Mazloum Doğan, who took the first courageous steps through their heroic actions.”

 She continued: “They drew global attention to the Kurdish cause and the oppression inflicted upon the Kurdish people by the occupiers of Kurdistan. Through their sacrifices, the history of Kurdish liberation was written, and we will continue on their path, no matter the cost.”
