According to Roj News, teams from the Martyrs’ Foundation are continuing the excavation of mass graves in Shengal as part of efforts to document the crimes committed against the Yazidi community and to secure the rights of the martyrs, in coordination with the Forensic Medicine Department in Baghdad.

Ahmed Kusa al-Asadi, head of the mass-graves excavation team in Shengal, told Roj News that “the foundation’s teams specialize in search, analysis, and excavation, and they work according to annual plans set by the Mass Graves Directorate within the foundation.”

Al-Asadi explained that the team began opening the graves in March 2019, noting that 74 mass graves have been opened so far, out of 90. He added that over the past 15 days, the team has started work at several sites, beginning with the village of Hardan, where the first mass grave was completed, and today the team launched work in the al-Jazeera complex in the Ba'aj district.

He added that all mass graves in al-Jazeera will be opened, after which the team will move on to other sites registered in the Martyrs’ Foundation’s database. These sites include more than five or six locations, some containing multiple mass graves and others containing a single grave.
