The volunteer committees in Manbij canton, which were formed from the civil councils and communes in the canton, began collecting signatures on the petition demanding the physical freedom of leader Abdullah Ocalan. The process of collecting signatures began in the city and will continue to cover all the countryside of the province, as part of the campaign that was launched on February 9 of this month.

Regarding this issue, a member of the Syrian Popular Initiative for Leader’s Freedom, Muhammad Hussam Al-Shawakh, pointed out, “The fascist Turkish government has increased its violations against the leader Abdullah Ocalan and is still imposing severe isolation on him. Out of our belief in the leader’s thought and philosophy, the global campaign for leader’s freedom was launched on October 10 of Last year, as the peoples of NE, Syria with all its components, we joined this campaign.”

Al-Shawakh continued: “We participated in many activities demanding the freedom of the leader Abdullah Ocalan. Among these activities is a campaign to collect signatures that we will send to the European Union. This campaign was launched with an official announcement from the Syrian Popular Initiative Committee for the Freedom of the Leader in the city of Manbij on the 17th of this month."

Muhammad Al-Shawakh added: “This campaign was distributed in the form of committees that include all the institutions of the democratic civil administration in Manbij canton, and the largest part lies in the communes, as they represent the majority of the people, and which will collect signatures from all parts of the city and the countryside.”

Muhammad Al-Shawakh emphasized at the conclusion of his speech, “The history of this campaign coincides with last year’s campaign, in which the number of signatures in Manbij canton alone reached more than half a million signatures, which were sent to the Committee Against Torture (CPT), and we seek during this campaign to emphasize our demands for the European Union to achieve Physical freedom of the leader.

In his turn, Hassan Hussein, a resident of the city of Manbij, said: “We came today to demand the physical freedom of leader Abdullah Ocalan and to affirm our voice by signing this petition demanding the physical freedom of the leader.”

Hassan Hussein stressed at the end of his speech, "We, as the people of the city of Manbij, will continue to join campaigns and events until the physical freedom of Leader Abdullah Ocalan is achieved."
