Lawyers’ Union concludes 6th conference, elects new co-chairs

The Lawyers’ Union in Jazira Canton held its sixth conference yesterday under the slogan “Democratic laws are the guarantee of peace and a democratic society” at the Muhammad Sheikho Center for Culture and Art in Qamishlo. The event was attended by 286 lawyers, along with representatives from the Autonomous Administration institutions, the Democratic Society Movement, and civil organizations.

Several speeches were delivered during the conference, all emphasizing that the Lawyers’ Union plays a vital role in achieving democracy and peace through the full implementation of just laws, noting that the law serves as the common reference for all members of society. Speakers stressed that there is no substitute for its role in protecting achievements, calling on legal professionals to safeguard the upcoming phase and strengthen their role in achieving social justice through democratic laws, standing by society and marginalized groups, not by authorities, and conveying the message of justice and defense of rights.

The conference then closed its sessions to the media to discuss several issues related to the work of lawyers, including the development of the judicial system in the areas of the Autonomous Administration, as well as reviewing annual organizational and financial reports.

The conference concluded late last night with the election of lawyer Khanim Ayo and Mohammed Ismail as the new co-chairs of the union.

Following the election, the conference issued its final statement, which read:

“On September 9, 2025, the sixth conference of the Lawyers’ Union in Jazira Canton was held at the Muhammad Sheikho Center for Culture and Art in Qamishlo under the slogan ‘Democratic laws are the guarantee of peace and a democratic society’, with the participation of 286 voting members. After completing the agenda, the following decisions were adopted:

1. Affirming commitment to the achievements of the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria.

2. Emphasizing the principle of a political solution and the implementation of UN Resolution 2254, issued in 2015.

3. Stressing the representation of all components of Syria in a transitional government, as determined by these components in a comprehensive national conference.

4. Holding free parliamentary elections under UN supervision.

5. Enshrining the rights of the Kurdish people in the constitution as an indigenous people while guaranteeing the rights of other communities as well.

6. Commitment to a democratic, decentralized, pluralistic system.

7. Ensuring transparent transitional justice through a national body that represents the genuine will of all components of the Syrian people.

8. Sending a message to the Council of Ministers of the European Union regarding the “right to hope” for Leader Abdullah Ocalan.

9. Sending a message to the European Court of Human Rights in France regarding Leader Abdullah Ocalan.”
