Journalists in NE Syria recall Jehan, Nazem, and Rizgar

The Free Media Union in NE Syria organized a commemoration ceremony for three martyrs of free media: Hawar News Agency correspondents Rizgar Adanmish and Jehan Belkin, and journalist Nazem Dashtan. The event took place at the Mohammed Sheikhou Hall for Culture and Arts in Qamishli, in the Jazira Canton.

Journalists, media professionals, intellectuals, members of the Martyrs’ Families Council, religious leaders, and representatives of the Autonomous Administration attended the ceremony.

The event began with a minute of silence in honor of the martyrs, followed by a slideshow highlighting their careers and dedication in the media field.

In a speech, Beniad Jaziri, advisor to the Free Media Union, highlighted the significant role the media martyrs played in conveying the truth about the July 19 revolution to the international public and exposing the so-called war policies against the components of NE Syria. He emphasized that the martyrs fearlessly traveled to different regions to report the truth, making great sacrifices for their media mission.

Ahmed Mohamed, an administrator from Hawar News Agency, spoke about the agency’s media legacy during the July 19 revolution, noting that it has produced seven martyrs, reflecting the risks and responsibilities journalists in Northeast Syria bear in conveying the truth and representing the Kurdish community to the world. He added that the region’s communities, media institutions, military forces, and residents all made significant sacrifices. This societal solidarity, he noted, is one of the hallmarks of the Rojava revolution, and he affirmed Hawar News Agency’s commitment to continue pursuing the truth.

Arin Sweid, administrator of the Women’s Media Union, said that the three martyrs left a clear mark across various aspects of the July 19 revolution—within media institutions, on military fronts, and within society—and renewed the pledge to carry their pens and cameras until the goals are achieved.

A message from the Women’s Protection Units, read by journalist Joanna Juma from Ronahi TV, emphasized continuing the struggle to protect women in Syria and to uphold the martyrs’ legacy in building a free and democratic society.

The ceremony included two poems by journalist Anas Yildiz and Kurdish poet Farhad Mardi, as well as a musical performance honoring the martyrs and resistance, performed by artists Nesrin Boutan and Newroz Afrin.

The ceremony concluded with participants visiting the tomb of martyr Delil Sarokhan, where flowers were laid on the graves of martyrs Jehan Belkin and Nazem Dashtan.
