Journalist Nazim Dashtan

ANHA correspondent Cîhan Bîlgîn and journalist Nazim Dashtan were martyred yesterday, Thursday (December 19), while covering Turkish attacks on the Tishrin Dam. At 15:20, on the road connecting the town of Serrin to Tishrin Dam, they were targeted by a drone belonging to the Turkish occupying state.

Our comrades dedicated their lives to conveying the truth and the free life. They became examples of the pioneers of free media, working under the most difficult conditions, never retreating.

Nazim

Our comrade Nazim was born in 1992 in the Gihadîn district of the city of Agiri in North Kurdistan. He grew up in a patriotic family and, like thousands of Kurdish youth, faced the harsh realities of Kurdistan and the brutality and oppression of the occupiers at an early age.

Faced with these truths, he chose the path of struggle and took up journalism because it is one of the most impactful paths. He entered Rojava during the attacks by ISIS mercenaries in 2014. He started in Afrin, then Kobani, where he covered the historic resistance and shared it with the world.

In 2015, when the resistance of the Autonomous Administration began in North Kurdistan, he moved there. He continued his media struggle in the town of Silopya in Şırnakh, where he exposed the truth about the Turkish state to the world through his writing and camera. For this reason, the Turkish state issued an arrest warrant against him. Despite all the pressures, he never gave up his journalistic work, and in 2016, he returned to Rojava from North Kurdistan.

Over long years of journalistic struggle, in Afrin, Kobani, Raqqa, Girê Spî, Shingal, and South Kurdistan, he carried out his media work with great dedication. On December 8 of this year, when the Turkish occupying state and its mercenaries attacked the Qereqozaqê Bridge and the Tishrin Dam, he went there.

Over 11 days, he revealed the atrocities committed by the Turkish state and its mercenaries through the news reports, files, images, and footage he prepared. For this reason, he was targeted. After he and our comrade Cîhan Bîlgîn filmed the effects of the Turkish attacks on the Tishrin Dam, their vehicle was targeted on the way back.

Nazim Dashtan, through the reports he prepared and the images and footage he captured, showed many truths to the world and became an inspiration to dozens of journalists. With his humble and dedicated personality and his confidence, he became a source of morale and struggle for his fellow journalists. Like all those walking the path of truth and creativity, he added a golden page to the history of free media.
