Israeli airstrikes escalate in Syria during August

Throughout the month of August, Israeli forces escalated their military and security activities in southern Syria, particularly in Quneitra and Daraa, amid rising regional tensions and growing concerns that the area could devolve into an open battleground. The interim Syrian government remained entirely absent in the face of these developments.

A total of 25 Israeli ground incursions and movements were recorded across rural Quneitra and Daraa. The latest involved an Israeli patrol advancing towards the Sidā al-Golan junction in the southern countryside, adjacent to the demarcation line with the occupied Golan and the administrative border with Daraa in the Yarmouk Basin.

Israeli forces also established more than 15 temporary military checkpoints in various locations, arrested at least six civilians in raids across al-Samdaniyah, Trinjah, and Ruwayhinah, and carried out approximately ten house raids. Two homes in Quneitra, including one in al-Qahtaniyah, were demolished. In addition, agricultural land was bulldozed in Jabata al-Khashab, with trees transferred into Israeli-held territory.

Israeli troops deployed in Tal al-Ahmar (west and east), Tal Kurum, and Mount Hermon, while also blocking main roads such as the Kudnah–al-Asbah route. Furthermore, settlers laid the foundation stone for a new settlement in the depopulated village of Jawiza, to be named Navi Habashan. Israeli forces also distributed food aid in Bureiqa and Beir al-Ajam.

Airstrikes

Seven Israeli air and missile strikes were conducted during August, five of which targeted areas in rural Damascus, striking military positions in Jabal al-Mana‘, Deir ‘Ali, Kafr Hoor, and Bayt Tima. Additional strikes targeted Quneitra and several military sites along the Suwayda axis.

These attacks resulted in casualties among Damascus government forces, with six members of the so-called 44th Division killed in rural Damascus, alongside the death of one civilian.

Overall Toll for August

In total, the month witnessed 25 Israeli ground incursions, the establishment of 15 temporary checkpoints, the arrest of six civilians, the raiding of 10 homes, the demolition of two houses, and seven airstrikes. These operations resulted in the deaths of six soldiers and one civilian.

Observers’ Assessments

Analysts argue that Israel’s multifaceted actions—ranging from repeated ground incursions to sustained aerial strikes—reflect a deliberate effort to establish an on-the-ground presence and maintain direct surveillance. By setting up new military positions and temporary checkpoints, Israel appears intent on cutting vital routes linking Damascus to Lebanon, thereby restricting the supply lines of Hezbollah or other Iran-backed forces.

The scope and intensity of these moves also underscore Israel’s determination to prevent any military entrenchment by Iran or Hezbollah in southern Syria, while simultaneously imposing new lines of contact with Damascus. The proliferation of checkpoints and the opening of military routes point toward a gradual establishment of what amounts to an undeclared security buffer zone.
