Intellectuals condemn Sipan Hazni assassination

For years, the region has witnessed efforts to preserve coexistence among its various communities amid the divisions and tensions left by the war. At the same time, assassinations and targeted attacks have raised concerns that such incidents could be exploited to reignite conflicts and threaten the region’s security.

The assassination of Sipan Hazni (Sami Sheikhmos Hasso), a fighter in the Hasakah Brigade, comes at a time when the peoples of the region are seeking to move beyond years of war toward a phase based on dialogue and political solutions while safeguarding the rights of the various components of Syrian society.

During his latest meeting on developments in Rojava, Commander Abdullah Ocalan described the ongoing developments as provocative, saying: “You kill a young man brutally, then use that as a pretext to enter the city. This is provocation. This destruction targeting the basis for dialogue must be stopped immediately.”

In this context, ANHA agency spoke with several intellectuals in Tirbespiye. Sheikhmos Juma, a member of the Jazira Intellectuals Union, Tirbespiye branch, said: “The assassination of Sipan Hazni brings to mind the crimes committed by ISIS,” noting that the incident cannot be viewed separately from attempts to destabilize the region and sow divisions among its people.

He added: “Such acts could pave the way for sedition among the region’s communities, particularly between Kurds and Arabs,” explaining that there are attempts to push the region’s people toward new conflicts after years of sacrifice.

He noted that the people of the region had lost thousands of martyrs in the fight against ISIS over the past years, and that the coexistence achieved among its communities had come at a great cost. Protecting these gains, he said, requires awareness among all residents and avoiding attempts to reignite conflict.

He said Syrian society is entering a phase that requires moving from war to peace, and from conflict toward building a democratic society. He stressed that integration among Syria’s communities does not mean marginalizing any group or abandoning its distinctiveness.

“Genuine integration means Kurds, Arabs, Syriacs and other communities participating in building society and ensuring their rights and freedoms, including the right of each community to preserve its language, culture and identity,” he said, stressing that coexistence cannot be built on exclusion.

He confirmed that Sipan Hazni had served as a fighter in the Syrian army, and said his assassination requires the circumstances of the crime to be uncovered and those responsible to be held accountable. He stressed that justice must take its course and that state institutions must fulfill their responsibilities regarding the crime.

Meanwhile, Shawkat Muslim, also a member of the Jazira Intellectuals Union, Tirbespiye branch, said: “The assassination of Sipan Hazni is unacceptable,” noting that such acts threaten the stability in the region and could become a factor in inciting discord among members of society.

He added: “The incident could be exploited to fuel tensions between Kurds and Arabs. The people of the region do not want to return to an atmosphere of war, and any dispute or issue should be addressed through dialogue, away from violence.”

He stressed that dialogue and sitting at the negotiating table are the way to address disputes, calling on the people of the region not to be drawn into actions that fuel conflict and to work to protect security and stability.

He said the current phase requires solidarity to build a united, democratic and secure Syria, explaining that Syrians from all communities can live together when there is a genuine will for dialogue and respect for everyone’s rights.

He concluded by stressing that dialogue and coexistence form the foundation for overcoming the effects of war and reaching a future marked by security and stability.
